The Donner Institute for Research in Religious and Cultural History is a private research institute attached to the Foundation for Åbo Akademi University. The aim of the Institute is to promote research in religious and cultural history. It was established in 1959 as a result of a large donation made by Olly and Uno Donner. The stated aim of the donation is “[…] to encourage scholarly research in religious and cultural history […]”. In order to fulfil this aim, the Donner Institute maintains a special scientific library, supports research in the field of the Institute by awarding scholarships, and organizes conferences and seminars. The Donner Library is the largest special library on Comparative Religion in the Nordic countries. The Institute is administered by a board and its work is led by the Director. Following the will of the donators Uno and Olly Donner, the institute aims at furthering research in the fields of religion and culture on “strictly scientific grounds,” mainly focusing on mysticism and esotericism, but also including contemporary aspects of religion and philosophy, science, art and literature. The Donner Institute strives to implement these guidelines given by the donators, while simultaneously adapting the research strategies to current topics and topics of interest within the field of religious studies. The research is carried out in close cooperation with the subjects of comparative religion at Åbo Akademi University and the University of Turku as well as the Finnish Society for the Study of Religion (SUS). The research activities include e.g.: Symposia Roundtable conferences The publication series Scripta Instituti Donneriani Aboensis The e-journal Approaching Religion Research grants The Donner Research Prize Inviting guest lecturers Symposia: Since 1962, the Donner Institute has regularly arranged Nordic symposia within the field of religious studies. A year before the first conference, a professorship in comparative religion had been created at Åbo Akademi University on the basis of funds donated by the Donner Institute. Until 1978, the symposia were arranged biannually and, after that, every third year. Since 2007, the symposia have been arranged yearly. The conference papers presented at the symposia are published in the series Scripta Instituti Donneriani Aboensis. Further information about the symposia is given by conference secretary Björn Dahla, donner.institute@abo.fi. On May 12th 2016 we arrange the symposium Art Approaching Science and Religion on Sibelius museum in collaboration with the art laboratory AmosLAB. Publications: The Donner Institute brings out two publications: the book series Scripta Instituti Donneriani Aboensis and the e-journal Approaching Religion, which are both online publications. Scripta Instituti Donneriani Aboensis consists of papers held at our symposia. The website is located at www.abo.fi/scripta. Papers presented at our round table gatherings are published in the open access e-journal Approaching Religion on its own website at www.abo.fi/approachingreligion.
The Berlin Graduate School Muslim Cultures and Societies (BGSMCS) investigates the plurality, changeability, and global connectedness of Muslim cultures and societies. The area of study includes Muslim societies in the Middle East, Africa, and Asia, as well as Muslim communities in Europe and North America. The Graduate School examines, in a systematic and comparative way, concepts, practices, and institutions variously understood as Islamic. Special attention is given to relations between Muslims and non-Muslims, as well as forms of inter- and intra-cultural communication. In close cooperation with its partner institutions in Germany and abroad, the Graduate School offers doctoral candidates a broad educational program of exceptional quality coupled with intensive mentoring for individual dissertation projects, training that will qualify graduates to hold leading positions in academia, the media, and politics. The Graduate School’s three-year doctoral program begins in October. Up to fifteen doctoral students are admitted annually, ten of whom areawarded scholarships provided by the Graduate School. Local Partners Since 2007 the Berlin Graduate School Muslim Cultures and Societies has been funded by the Excellence Initiative of the German Federal and State Governments and by Free University of Berlin. Participating institutions are Free University of Berlin (Speaker university), Humboldt University of Berlin (Institute of Asian and African Studies), and, as the only non-university institution, the Center for Modern Oriental Studies in Berlin. Berlin, with its wide-ranging variety of academic and cultural institutions, provides a unique environment for the Graduate School. Doctoral candidates will benefit from this wealth of resources. Berlin boasts of excellent libraries and manuscript collections, especially the Staatsbibliothek, as well as two museums that house important collections relevant to the area of study. With its Foreign Office, embassies, political foundations, and major think tanks – notably German Institute for International and Security Affairs – Berlin is at the centre of German decision making vis-à-vis the Muslim world. The Graduate School can also build upon a well-established and successful history of collaboration among many of the Principal Investigators, who are mainly affiliated to Free University of Berlin, Humboldt University of Berlin and Center for Modern Oriental Studies. They offer doctoral candidates opportunities to meet fellow researchers and to find additional research contexts related to their projects. Contacts students make and activities in which they engage will allow them to acquire the expert knowledge essential for academia, politics, journalism, and social involvement alike.
