In a fresh provocation to Australian Muslim community, a Melbourne school has been accused of forcing a Muslim student to watch an offensive cartoon of Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him). The video was one of a series of examples on “hybridized media” and its effects on social media. “My daughter also tried to express her discomfort at the video but unfortunately the teacher didn’t care and continued to play the video, forcing my child to view that content. This has aggravated my child and my family’s sentiments in a painful manner and has put us in a painful psychological and mental trauma. We as Muslims cannot tolerate anything against our holy Prophet Muhammad (PBUH).” the father wrote in a Facebook post. The father demanded an apology from the school as well as an explanation for why the cartoon was necessary. Criticizing the school, the Islamic Council of Victoria said in a statement that members of the Muslim community in Melbourne were “extremely upset” by the incident. Meeting with the Education Department and the school, the Council said they received a promise to no longer use the material. “As Australians, we believe that it is very reasonable to expect that the material taught in our schools does not seriously offend members of different communities and is cognizant of Australia’s multi-faith and multi-cultural diversity,” the Council said. In the meantime, a spokesperson for the Victorian Department of Education said a review of the incident was under way. “The Department is reviewing this incident. Once the review is complete, the Department will decide whether any extra advice should be provided to schools in relation to similar sensitive issues. Full support is being provided to any student that has been affected.” Source: AboutIslam.net

GainPeace, a Chicago-based nonprofit organization, has launched a new campaign titled “Truthful Man” to educate Americans on the true manners of Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him and his progeny), and countering a hate campaign that went up last month. “There had been some recent attacks targeting Muslims in Chicago and across the nation. Islamophobia at times stems from the lack of education about Islam and Prophet Muhammad or education from unreliable sources,” Sabeel Ahmed, executive director of GainPeace, said in a statement cited by IndyStar on Thursday, July 20. “Thus, we want to offer our fellow Americans an opportunity to learn the true teachings of Islam from its main source, the Qur’an. “Previous educational campaigns of GainPeace have generated numerous calls of support and building of alliances with interfaith groups, minority groups, and neighbors.” The billboard followed a controversial billboard which popped up last June in Indianapolis on I-465 near the Washington Street exit. Featuring the words “The Perfect Man”, apparently in reference to Prophet Muhammad (pbuh), the billboard followed by a list of attributes including “rapist” and “slave owner”. The billboard gives no indication who paid for it, save for the word “Truthophobes” – an Australian group dedicated to publishing anti-Islamic materials. Indiana representative Andre Carson said he believes the billboard is untrue and that the billboard’s author takes Islamic text and history out of context “just like Al-Qaeda, ISIS and the Klan do to religious texts to justify their bigotry.” GainPeace said the billboard, which will be up until July 30, is one part of a six-week campaign designed to educate people about the Prophet Muhammad (pbuh & hp). Other portions of the campaign, titled “The truth about Muhammad: Peace be upon him,” include mailing out 15,000 postcards about Muhammad and creating a 30-second video to be shared on social media sites.
