The successful candidate (m/f/d) will be expected to represent the field of Islamic Studies in both research and teaching in an appropriate breadth, and to have excellent national and inter-national credentials. His / her research can focus on contemporary as well as historical topics of the Arab-Islamic world and should include work with Arabic as a source language. Teaching is expected to cover at least one area of specialization in the field of modern Islam. The successful candidate will be expected to teach at undergraduate and graduate level in the Bachelor and Master programs Arabistik (Arabic Studies). Course language is German. Furthermore, he / she must have a proven track record concerning the successful application for external research funding, a scientific visibility at a national and international level, leadership competencies, and the capacity to contribute to the development of interdisciplinary research projects within the Faculty of Arts and to collaborative teaching and research projects within the university network Halle-Jena-Leipzig.
Applicants must hold a PhD and postdoctoral lecture qualification (Habilitation) or equivalent academic merits in the field of Islamic Studies (“Islamwissenschaft”) as well as pedagogical qualifications through prior teaching experience. In case of a candidate’s first professorial appointment, the appointment is intended to be initially on the W2 level and limited to six years; the transition to a W3 professorship without renewed job announcement is based on a positive tenure evaluation, at the latest after six years.
