The Faculty of Philological and Cultural Studies, University of Vienna, seeks to appoint a full professor of Cultural and Intellectual History of the Islamic World.

The applicant should represent the subject of Islamic Studies in research and teaching in an appropriate breadth and have an outstanding international reputation. The research focus should be on the cultural and intellectual history of the Arab-Islamic world from Early Modern Age to the present and should include the source language Arabic (and possibly another relevant source language, such as Persian). In teaching, a focus on the post-classical period to the present is expected, as is participation in and responsibility for teaching in the Bachelor of Oriental Studies and the Master’s program “Arab World Studies: Language and Society”, as well as in the Faculty’s doctoral program. The successful applicant is also expected to participate in the Cluster of Excellence “EurAsian Transformations” and other inter- and transdisciplinary collaborative structures in research and teaching.

The University of Vienna expects the successful candidate to acquire, within three years, proficiency in German sufficient for teaching in bachelor’s programs and for participation in university committees.
