With new cemetery and mosque, Muslims in Manitoba feel more at home

Muslims in Morden, a city in southern Manitoba’s Pembina Valley in Canada, will soon have a dedicated burial site at the newly developed Lakeside Cemetery — the second such site in the province after Winnipeg.

Operated by the Pembina Valley Islamic Society, the mosque is located in an 1,800-square-foot former commercial space in a downtown strip mall on North Railway Street.

The Pembina Valley Islamic Society (PVIS) collaborated with city officials to create a cemetery that aligns with Islamic burial practices. Graves are oriented toward the Kaaba in Mecca, and the site is separate from non-Muslim sections.

Over the past five years, Morden’s Muslim population has grown to nearly 150 families of different nationalities. The city’s welcoming nature has encouraged many to stay.

The new cemetery and mosque provide essential services, helping to build a strong foundation for future generations. Syed Faizan Nasir, a director of PVIS, emphasizes the importance of these developments in retaining residents and fostering community growth. With the establishment of the mosque and cemetery, Morden’s Muslim community now has a place to pray, bury their loved ones, and build a future together.
