Al-Maktoum College of Higher Education
Established in 2001, Al-Maktoum College of Higher Education is a unique, independent, research-led centre of excellence for students and staff of all religions and none. Funded primarily by the Al-Maktoum Foundation, it is the first HE establishment of its kind in Scotland, promoting multiculturalism and greater understanding while building bridges between communities through its promotion of Middle Eastern and Islamic Studies.
Its Patron, His Highness Shaikh Hamdan Bin Rashid Al-Maktoum, Deputy Ruler of Dubai and Minister of Finance of the United Arab Emirates, officially opened The College – originally known as Al-Maktoum Institute – in May 2002.
Abertay University originally validated its masters and postgraduate programs and then a subsequent validation agreement with the University of Aberdeen ran for a successful period of eight years.
A total of 175 students from more than 30 countries have graduated from the College’s contemporary, postgraduate degree programs.
The Academic Training Program (ATP) and Summer School educational programs were introduced in 2003 and demand continues to grow for these.
Scottish Qualification Authority (SQA) awarded and credit-rated courses started in 2014 and SQA accredited certificates were also offered for ATP students for the first time in 2015.
With the aim of running MSc programs in the specialized area of Islamic Finance, a new collaboration agreement was agreed with the University of Dundee in 2016.
The College is proud to be part of the community in Dundee. In 2009 it opened its Community Fund to help support groups and charities in the city and surrounding areas.
