St. Luke United Methodist Church, located near Philadelphia, is fostering a friendship with its Muslim neighbors from the As-Salaam Islamic Society, who utilize the church’s fellowship hall for Friday prayers, children’s classes, and special events. This partnership exemplifies a commitment to bridging the apprehensive divide between Christianity and Islam, aligning with the United Methodist Church’s resolutions aimed at encouraging interfaith dialogue and cooperation.

Both faiths share significant commonalities, tracing their roots back to Abraham and honoring Jesus as a prophet. Although they differ in some beliefs, Rev. Mark Salvacion, the pastor at St. Luke, actively encourages conversations and collaboration between the two groups, emphasizing the value of learning from each other.

Salvacion has been instrumental in solidifying this interfaith relationship since his arrival in 2022, organizing joint activities such as Bible studies that compare the Quran and Bible, and participating in communal events like a back-to-school bookbag collection. The relationship aims to create a welcoming environment for the Muslim community, particularly after the closure of the nearby Villanova Masjid in 2018, which left a void for local families seeking a place to worship.

The As-Salaam Islamic Society has found a stable home at St. Luke, benefiting from a space that is separate yet accessible, allowing for prayer and educational gatherings without drawing negative attention. Their Sunday school enrolls about two dozen children, focusing on instilling good character and foundational knowledge of Islamic values.

While some resistance to their presence exists, the church has provided significant protection and support, enabling the society to practice its faith freely. Despite facing anti-Muslim sentiment from some peers in the broader community, Salvacion remains committed to promoting understanding and solidarity among all faiths.

Eid celebrations also reinforce this unity, with St. Luke members invited to partake in the festivities of Eid al-Fitr and Eid al-Adha, highlighting the shared values of openness in both Islam and Christianity. Ultimately, this growing interfaith relationship not only enriches the experiences of the congregations involved but also exemplifies a model for coexistence and mutual respect in a diverse community.
