We are seeking an outstanding scholar to join the Faculty of Oriental Studies as Associate Professor of Islamic History (before 1500 CE). This post offers a scholar with a growing national and international reputation an exciting opportunity to become established as a leader in the rapidly developing and increasingly important field of Islamic history. The postholder will be elected to an Official Fellowship of St Cross College.
The Associate Professor will engage in advanced research using primary sources in the Arabic language in any field of the history of Muslim societies before 1500CE, and will publish the findings of that research in international journals and academic presses, as well as seeking opportunities for collaborative and externally funded research projects.
She/he will develop Islamic history in Oxford through conferences, workshops and seminars. She/he will give lectures, classes, and tutorial (small group) teaching, coordinating (with colleagues) the undergraduate degree courses in Arabic and contributing to the teaching of pre-modern Islamic history for other undergraduate and graduate courses. The Associate Professor will supervise undergraduate and graduate dissertations, and Master’s and research students, and may also serve as an examiner for relevant degrees. There will also be a requirement to participate in the administration of the Faculty, and of the College.
The successful candidate will have an outstanding record of publication and research in one or more fields of the history of Muslim societies before 1500 CE, and will bring to Oxford current and projected research projects.
With a record of successful undergraduate teaching, including experience of designing and introducing new courses, and the ability to lecture in an interesting and engaging manner to a mixed audience, you will demonstrate a high degree of expertise in the Arabic language and the ability to instruct students up to doctoral level in the use primary sources in Arabic for the study of Islamic history. You will be able to show ability and readiness to contribute effectively to academic administration; a record of successful collaboration with colleagues in pursuit of common goals in research, teaching and administration. Candidates must have a doctorate in the field of Islamic History, complete by the time of appointment.
