Gender and Islam: Critical Approaches to History, Society and Culture is devoted to the study of gender, sex and sexuality in Muslim societies and communities. This includes critical reflections on the terms of analysis, and original approaches to the diverse cultural, social and political dimensions of relevant topics. The series seeks to scrutinize the very discourses of ‘gender and Islam’ and takes an innovative approach, moving beyond the Islamic world, and including other religious traditions, regions and spaces where Islam is an influencing factor.
Spanning the early Islamic centuries to the present time, the Series encourages critical analyses from a broad variety of disciplines, based on various empirical and theoretical perspectives. Studies range from examination of Islamic foundational texts and later religious and literary discourses, to art and the arts, as well as social movements, past and present.
The Series Editors encourage contributions from all relevant disciplinary backgrounds to stimulate new and cutting-edge debates on gender, sex and sexuality across historical, linguistic and geographic boundaries.
