The 28th European Conference for South Asian Studies will take place in Heidelberg, Germany, from 1^st to 4^th of October 2025.
The European Conference for South Asian Studies (ECSAS) has met regularly since 1968, and provides an important opportunity to discuss current research and scholarship on topics relating to South Asia within the humanities and social sciences. The ECSAS conferences now operate under the auspices of the European Association for South Asian Studies (EASAS), a charitable academic association supporting research and teaching concerning South Asia with regard to all periods and fields of study.

The 2025 conference will be held at Heidelberg’s Neue Universität, which is located in the center of Heidelberg’s old city, and in walking distance from the South Asia Institute (SAI), the organizing institute, part of Heidelberg University which is Germany’s oldest university, founded in 1386.
The SAI is a hub for the study of South Asia in Europe, comprising seven departments working in transdisciplinary methodologies, offering students a broad range of language learning. Since 2019, the SAI has been located in the central Bergheim campus, as part of CATS: the Centre for Asian and Transcultural Studies–which comprises four member institutes: the SAI, the Heidelberg Centre for Transcultural Studies, the Institute of Anthropology and the Institute for East Asian Studies.

The academic committee has accepted a record 125 panels to form the basis of the conference program at ECSAS Heidelberg 2025. The call for papers will open on October 30, 2024. ECSAS invites scholars to submit paper abstracts that align with the panels that have been accepted by the academic committee, which you can see https://ecsas2025.com/panels/.

The submission deadline for paper proposals is January 30, 2025 (midnight CET). All paper applications will be reviewed by the panel conveners. All proposals must be made via the online form on the ECSAS website https://registration.ccicongress.com/cmsweb/ABS_Login.asp?IDcommessa=257006&Lang=EN

This includes any papers by panel conveners.

Please keep in mind that all paper submitters, including co-presenters, must be members of the EASAS by the time of submission. Prospective panelists can join here: https://www.easas.eu/become-a-member.

It is technically possible for one person to submit up to three paper proposals to different panels, but due to overwhelming demand, we have a strict limit of one panel presentation per person at ECSAS Heidelberg. Any scholars accepted in more than one panel will be required to choose only one.

All papers must be submitted in English. The title should not exceed 150 characters (incl. spaces). Each abstract should not exceed 1500 characters (incl. spaces). The content must be original and not presented previously. Regretfully, we do not have the resources for online presentations.
