Cambridge IGCSE Islamiyat syllabus enables learners to develop an understanding of the importance of the major beliefs of Islam, and of the early history of the Islamic community. As a result, learners develop their knowledge and understanding of the main elements of Islamic faith and history, evaluating the meaning and importance of these elements in the lives and thoughts of Muslims. Although the syllabus is studied in English, some familiarity with passages from the Qur’an and Hadith in Arabic is assumed.

Why study Islam?

According to a research published recently by the US-based Pew Research Centre and reported in The Telegraph, Islam is the only religion growing faster than the world’s population. It is the world’s second largest religion after Christianity. About 1.6 billion people, or 23 percent of the world’s population, are Muslims. Thus, Islamic Studies has become a subject of strategic importance in the world today. For students wishing to study for any degree at Britain’s top universities, Religious Studies, including the study of Islam, is classified as one of the most important List A subjects that students should do and pass at school in order to be admitted into a top British university. Similarly, Muslim students who wish to do some of the College’s courses in the field of Islamic sciences, classical Arabic texts, balāgha, among others, this IGCSE program is an important route and preparation.

What career opportunities are there for students of Islam?

It is an important preparation for employment in state and local government, foreign office, journalism, media and broadcasting, teaching, academia, religious organizations, NGOs and other social agencies, security and intelligence services.

The Syllabus

Teaching is based on the Cambridge IGCSE curriculum. Cambridge International Examinations describes this syllabus as one that “enables learners to develop an understanding the importance of the major beliefs of Islam, and of the early history of the Islamic community. As a result, learners develop their knowledge and understanding of the main elements of Islamic faith and history, evaluating the meaning and importance of these elements in the lives and thoughts of Muslims. Although the syllabus is studied in English, some familiarity with passages from the Qur’an and Hadith in Arabic is assumed.”

The syllabus covers the following areas of academic study:

• Major themes of the Qurʾān
• The history and importance of the Qurʾān
• The life and importance of the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH)
• The first Islamic community
• Major teachings of the Ḥadīths of the Prophet
• The history and importance of the Ḥadīths
• The period of rule of the Rightly Guided Caliphs and their importance as leaders
• The Articles of Faith and the Pillars of Islam

Who teaches the classes?

The classes will be taught by Shaykh Michael Mumisa, a Cambridge Special Livingstone PhD Scholar, Trinity Hall, University of Cambridge, who also holds an Ijāza/Shahādat al-Faḍīla (with distinction).

How are the classes delivered?

All classes are delivered online. Students can attend these classes online from anywhere in the world from the comfort of their homes.
