The Faculty of Oriental Studies is seeking to appoint an enthusiastic and well qualified scholar to teach in the field of Islamic History (ca. 600-1500 CE). The Departmental Lecturer will support provision for the teaching of the history of Muslim societies in the Faculty of Oriental Studies, providing cover for some of the duties of the Associate Professor of Islamic History (Christian Sahner) while he is on research leave.
The Departmental Lecturer will teach undergraduates reading for the degrees of BA in Oriental Studies and in European and Middle Eastern Languages, and Masters students reading primarily for the degree of MPhil in Islamic Studies and History. The Departmental Lecturer will also be encouraged to pursue their independent research and publish academic papers, as a secondary commitment to their teaching. Some academic administration and examining will also be required.
You will have a doctorate or equivalent in early/medieval Islamic history, to be achieved before the start date of the appointment, a proven ability to give lectures and classes in the field of Islamic history, and an ability to teach texts in Classical Arabic. The successful candidate will have a sufficient depth and breadth of knowledge in Islamic History to develop course materials and research proposals, a publication record and familiarity with the existing literature and research in the field, and experience of qualitative/quantitative research and analytical techniques. You will also have an ability and readiness to contribute to administration of degree courses through Faculty structures.
This position is based in central Oxford. This is a full-time, fixed-term position between 1 September 2021 (or as soon as possible thereafter) and 31 August 2023.
