The SBL (Society of Biblical Literature) International Meeting is held annually outside North America. It provides a unique forum for international scholars who are unable to attend the North American meeting and for all who wish to engage more directly SBL’s growing international membership and scholarship.
Program Unit: “Quran and Islamic Tradition in Comparative Perspective”
Chair: Abdulla Galadari
The Quran and Islamic Tradition in Comparative Perspective unit of the ISBL invites proposals for papers or pre-arranged panels to be presented at the upcoming 2024 international meeting.
The unit is particularly interested in exploring the profound historical relationships of the Quran and Islamic traditions with biblical and rabbinic traditions within the Near Eastern context. Suggested topics might include, but are not limited to, the Quran and Islamic tradition in the wider context of their history from Late Antiquity to the Modern period.
In the spirit of fostering a vibrant academic exchange, the meeting embraces different methods of comparative inquiry and is very inclusive to the diverse approaches ranging from traditional to revisionist. It is imperative that all papers have some comparative approach with biblical literature.
Please note that membership in the Society of Biblical Literature is required in order to submit a paper proposal.
Proposals require presentation title and an abstract of approximately 300 words—longer abstracts will be shortened. Papers are most often allotted 20-25 minutes in a session, with 5-10 minutes for discussion.
