Muslims in Britain, 1800‒1970, and Beyond: Historical Approaches & Why

This conference is a collaboration between the Muslims in Britain Research Network (MBRN), Everyday Muslim Heritage and Archive Initiative (EMHAI), and the University of Westminster, which will be hosted in the Westminster Voices series. This unique partnership aims to bring together scholars, practitioners, and communities to delve into the multifaceted histories of Islam and Muslims in Britain from the 1800s onwards.

Muslims have been a part of Britain’s landscape for centuries, their presence evolving and shaping the nation’s cultural fabric. From the earliest communities in the 19^th century to the transformative period of post-1960s migration, the narratives of Muslims in Britain are rich and diverse, reflecting a tapestry of experiences, identities, and contributions.

Perspectives from diverse backgrounds and positions, both academic and non-academic, are highly valued. Submissions are encouraged from individuals at any stage of their career, aiming to cultivate collaborative efforts with community stakeholders and enhance knowledge exchange. Submissions in various formats are welcomed, encompassing traditional academic papers, community heritage projects, poetry, spoken word, performances, and other artistic expressions. Topics for submissions can include but are not limited to:

• Intersectionality in historical Muslim identity in Britain
• Post- and de-colonial approaches within history
• Contemporary impact and influence of historical British Muslims
• Experiences of racism and prejudice in early British Muslims
• Histories of Muslim Organizations and Institutions
• Contestations in ‘British Muslim’ identity
• Socio-political activism to date
• Significant ‘British Muslim’ public figures
• Recent books/publications on the history of Islam and Muslims in Britain

Please submit abstract of no more than 300 words together with names and short biographies (150 words) of the presenter/s, institutional affiliation/s (if relevant), and contact details before 11^th May 2024 (5 pm).
