The Institute for Islamic and Middle Eastern Studies, Faculty of Humanities at the University of Bern seeks a scholar with a very good knowledge of the field as a whole and a historical/social science research profile.
In terms of research, the candidate should demonstrate at least two historically informed areas of work, one of which should be devoted to present-day societal issues and at least one of which should focus on the MENA region. In terms of teaching, the candidate should be able to address disciplinary concerns out of a strong interest in theory. Excellent knowledge of two languages of the region and the ability to integrate these skills into teaching are expected.
Depending on the qualifications of the applications received, the professor will be employed either as a full, as an associate or as an assistant professor (with tenure track). Prerequisites for a full or an associate professor include “Habilitation” or equal qualification. An assistant professorship requires an outstanding PhD dissertation and an appropriate project for “Habilitation”.
