Religion and Ethics in Contemporary Speculative Fiction
About The Event
Call for Papers
Proposal Submission Deadline: January 1, 2017
Organized by: Everett Community College, Everett, WA, US
Speculative fiction (SF) allows authors and readers to explore worlds that differ somehow from the one in which we currently live. While much attention has been given to portrayals of religion and religious communities in science fiction, other types of SF also examine these topics. Religious persons and communities often feature prominently in alternative histories, utopias and dystopias, post-apocalyptic settings, fantasy and horror stories.
Previously unpublished papers on religion or ethics in contemporary speculative fiction(s) of all types are therefore sought for an edited volume. Papers may examine, but are not limited to:
– ethical approaches to human bodies and/or boundaries
– reimagining religious communities
– conceptualizations of orthodoxy and heresy
– portrayals of New Religious Movements
– rituals and rites of passage in contemporary young adult literature (YA)
Proposals must include a 500 word abstract identifying the methodological and theoretical approaches utilized in the paper as well as a short bio about the author.
Please submit your proposal electronically by January 1st, 2017 to Sarah Marie Gallant, Associate Faculty at Everett Community College, via sarahmgallant@gmail.com.
