The Shortterm Research Group “Wege zu einer Ethik”, funded by Academy for Islam in Research and Society (AIWG), is a joint project of the Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin and the Goethe-Universität Frankfurt am Main. It aims at exploring the ethical thought of scholars of Islamic law (Fiqh and Uṣūl al-Fiqh) and of systematic theology (Kalām) and at developing their potential for current problems of applied ethics (“transfer”). A further project goal is the launch of an online dictionary of principle ethical concepts in the Islamic tradition.
Job description
Scientific research and teaching within the research group and in the field of Islamic Philosophy and the Foundations of Belief. Active participation in the working methods of the research group (contribution to the online dictionary, participation in workshops and conferences, preparation of the final publication etc.); tasks pertaining to scientific qualification (PhD project), which includes a study on the ethical thought of a scholar of the Islamic tradition (including a discussion of the transfer potential).
Requirements
Academic degree (M.A.) in Islamic Theology, Islamic Studies or a related subject (preferably with very good results); research project on the ethical work of a (post-)classical scholar from the domain of study of the research group, taking into account its relevance to the present times; very good knowledge of German, English and classical Arabic, preferably also other languages such as Persian or Ottoman; ability and motivation to work independently and interdisciplinarily, as well as interest in working on a joint research project.
HU seeks to increase the proportion of women in research and teaching, and specifically encourages qualified female researchers to apply. Applications of researchers from abroad are welcome.
