Call for Participants
Date: April 24-25, 2020
Venue: Ivan Franko National University, Lviv, Ukraine
Proposal Submission Deadline: February 15, 2020
The field of Ibadi studies has continued to grow substantially over the past two decades. An emerging trend has been the attention given to the importance of Ibadi manuscripts in European libraries, where Orientalists in the 19th and 20th centuries built impressive collections of Ibadi texts in England, France, Italy, Germany, Ukraine, Poland, and elsewhere. In some cases, Ibadi manuscripts were included in North American libraries, as well.
This second international workshop on “Ibadi Manuscripts and Manuscript Cultures” aims to investigate critically the histories and politics of these collections, with special attention to their acquisition and subsequent use by scholars from both outside and inside Ibadi communities.
Potential participants are invited to submit proposals on themes relating to Ibadi manuscripts held in European (or North American) libraries, with themes including but not limited to the following:
• Histories of acquisitions of Ibadi manuscripts by European travelers in the 19th and 20th centuries
• Problems and issues of provenance relating to Ibadi manuscripts held in European or North American collections
• Critical studies of the scholarship of Orientalists or Ibadi Scholars who relied on Ibadi collections in European libraries
• The intersections among Ibadi manuscripts and European colonialism in North Africa, the Arabian Peninsula, and East Africa
• The connections and interactions among local Ibadi scholars and European Orientalists working on Ibadism in the 19th and 20th centuries
• Descriptions, inventories, or catalogs of Ibadi manuscripts held in European or North American libraries or archives
• Issues related to the materiality of European-Ibadi Muslim interactions (e.g. bindings, paper & watermarks, ownership stamps and statements, etc.)
