MCB elects new Secretary General

The Muslim Council of Britain has elected it new Secretary General on Sunday 31 January. Zara Mohamed gained the majority of votes from its affiliates and was elected as Secretary General for a two-year term. She is the first female leader of the MCB and the youngest ever elected.

She is also the first female leader of any major Muslim organization in British Muslim history. Until now, Muslim women have had to seek senior roles outside of Muslim organizations, whether in political parties or mainstream organizations. Harun Khan, the previous Secretary General, leaves the organization after four years of successfully building a team at the MCB which has brought on new projects such as the Centre for Media Monitoring and Visit My Mosque.

Zara on her election said: ‘My vision is to continue to build a truly inclusive, diverse and representative body; driven by the needs of British Muslims for the common good’. Zara’s election has been widely celebrated across the country.
