Muslim Leader Appointed to Maryland’s Hate Crimes Commission

Attorney General Anthony Brown has appointed Adileh Sharieff to the Maryland Commission on Hate Crime Response and Prevention.

The commission is responsible for developing strategies to combat hate crimes and evaluating state laws related to this pressing issue Maryland Matters reported.

This appointment comes as Maryland sees a rise in hate crime reports, particularly targeting Muslim and Palestinian communities.

“At a time of increased reports of hate activity in Maryland, including anti-Muslim and anti-Palestinian hate, I am confident that Ms. Sharieff will bring a critical voice to the diverse group of stakeholders that we have convened to help eradicate hate in our schools and communities,” Brown said in a statement.

Attorney General Anthony Brown has appointed Adileh Sharieff to the Maryland Commission on Hate Crime Response and Prevention.

With her extensive experience in community service and social equity, Sharieff is expected to strengthen the commission’s work, especially in addressing hate in educational and community settings.

A resident of Montgomery County, Sharieff has served on the Board of Trustees for the Islamic Center of Maryland, where she continues to volunteer in social services and outreach efforts. She also co-chairs the Muslim Cohort of the Montgomery County Council Anti-Hate Task Force and has partnered with numerous organizations to combat food insecurity.

Sharieff’s appointment is in an acting capacity, pending Senate confirmation during the 2025 legislative session.
