The Islamic Learning Institute (ILI)

The Islamic Learning Institute (ILI), founded in 1978 by Imam Qasim Ahmed, is a religious and academic institution dedicated to educating Muslims and the general public about Islam. Through seminars, workshops, teacher training, and lecture series, ILI promotes the practical teachings of the Qur’an and the Sunnah of Prophet Muhammad (PBUH & HP) to foster peaceful global interactions.

ILI focuses on Islamic scholarship, emphasizing Qur’anic Arabic, seerah (the Prophet’s life), fiqh (law), and the teachings of Imam Warith Deen Mohammed. Its goals include encouraging millions to read the Qur’an in its original Arabic, using unique teaching methods developed by Imam Qasim Ahmed, who became renowned for making Qur’anic Arabic accessible.

Inspired by Imam Warith Deen Mohammed’s emphasis on learning Qur’anic Arabic, ILI aims to revive Islamic thought in the 21st century for humanity’s social, cultural, educational, and spiritual development. Its vision is to collaborate with people of all backgrounds, believing that educating and nurturing human nature can lead to harmony and peace. ILI studies diverse schools of thought to extract principles for practical living, aligned with Allah’s universal creation.

The Future of ILI

Following the passing of Imam Qasim Ahmed, the Islamic Learning Institute (ILI) continues to pursue its mission. Leading this effort is Imam Qasim’s widow, Sister Nadiyah Ahmad, a professional administrator, teacher of Islamic and academic studies, and published author. Alongside other protégés and colleagues of Imam Qasim and Sister Nadiyah, she is dedicated to delivering Islamic education through proven techniques. Together, they are developing innovative and dynamic educational models and products to meet the evolving needs of the community.

About the Founder

Imam Qasim Ahmed’s Islamic journey began with the Nation of Islam under the leadership of the late Honorable Elijah Muhammad. In 1975, he further deepened his faith and knowledge under the guidance of the late Imam Warith Deen Mohammed. During the 1980s, he rose to prominence as Imam Mohammed’s national spokesperson. A devoted student of the Holy Qur’an, Imam Qasim developed a unique and accessible system for learning Qur’anic Arabic, making it easier for others to engage with the sacred text.

In 1978, Imam Qasim Ahmed began traveling across the United States to teach the language of the Qur’an. This effort led to the creation of the Islamic Learning Institute (ILI), which later evolved into a mobile school dedicated to helping followers of Imam Warith Deen Mohammed learn to read and study the Qur’an in its original Arabic. Over nearly 50 years, Imam Qasim earned his scholarly reputation through diligent study and extensive travel, conducting educational seminars, workshops, and lectures worldwide to teach the language of the Qur’an.
