RIMO Thesis Prize 2024-2025

To encourage the study of Islamic law and the Middle East, Association for the Study of Islamic Law and the Middle East (RIMO) has established the RIMO Prize. This prize is awarded biennially for a thesis, journal article, or other scholarly work on Islamic law and the Middle East by students at Dutch or Belgian universities. Thesis by students at foreign universities that relate to the Netherlands or Belgium are also eligible for consideration.

In particular, students from faculties of Law, Humanities, or Social Sciences are invited to compete for the RIMO Prize 2024-2025 with their bachelor’s or master’s thesis. The RIMO Prize consists of a monetary award of €500.00 and a research stay at the Max Planck Institute for Social Anthropology in Halle (Saale, Germany).

The prize serves as recognition of original research and is generally awarded to one individual. The winner will also be invited to give a presentation on their submitted topic at the annual RIMO symposium. The text of this presentation will be published in Recht van de Islam. Preferably, the prize will be awarded to individuals who were under 35 years of age at the time of writing their submission.

The jury, appointed by the board, will evaluate submissions based on originality, composition, societal relevance, and language use.

The submission deadline for the 2024-2025 prize is March 1, 2025. Submissions can be sent to info@verenigingrimo.nl.

 

About RIMO

Association for the Study of Islamic Law and the Middle East (RIMO) was established on July 2, 1982. Its goal is to study Islamic law and the legal systems of the Middle East, disseminate knowledge on these subjects, promote the academic study of these legal sciences, and establish connections with like-minded organizations both nationally and internationally. In line with this mission, RIMO organizes an annual symposium featuring speakers from the Netherlands and abroad. The lectures from the symposium are published in Recht van de Islam.
